first edition, said to be suppressed by the author (the president of the University of Vermont) after it was criticized for its defense of the Indians. The controversial Chapter XXVII on "The Morals of the Indians" was omitted from later editions. In it, Sanders writes: "We entertain a very low opinion of the savages; it is certain that they entertain as low a one both of us and our morality" (page 290).
